HAZARDOUSE WASTE - April 18, 2026
The Town of New Scotland Highway Department will sponsor the next Household Hazardous Day on April 18, 2026. This event is open to Town of New Scotland residents and Village of Voorheesville residents. You must pre-register to attend. Acceptable wastes include pesticides, paints and stains, drain cleaners, pool chemicals, automotive fluids and batteries, gasoline and kerosene. Empty aerosols and dried latex paint can be disposed of in your regular trash.

Empty paint cans, dried latex paint in cans and empty aerosol containers can be disposed of in your regular trash. Coupons are required for residents to participate. Keep wastes in their original labeled containers. Tighten lids and pack securely in a cardboard box. Never mix chemicals. Wrap leaking containers in newspaper and place in plastic bag or container. DO NOT smoke near chemicals or leave product in a hot, unventilated vehicle for an extended period of time. For your SAFETY, please stay in your car. Workers will unload the material. Our Household Hazardous Waste program is partially financed with a grant from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
PRACTICE POLLUTION PREVENTION
Storm water runoff is rain that falls on roofs, lawns, or paved areas, and is carried away by a system of storm water pipes or culverts and ditches. As it flows over the land surface, it can be contaminated by debris, chemicals, dirt and other and other pollutants. this untreated water is then discharged directly into the water bodies we use for swimming, fishing, and drinking water. What you can do to help:
- recycle motor oil with service stations that charge oil for their customers, recycle antifreeze by bringing it to a radiator shop.
- Use hazardous substances properly. Clean up spills immediately.
- Filter and reuse paint thinner
- Recycle or dispose of household products that contain chemicals, such as insecticides, pesticides, paint, solvents, used motor oil and other fluids.
- DON'T POUR THEM ONTO THE GROUND OR INTO STORM DRAINS!
- PARTICIPATE IN HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTIONS DAY TO PROPERLY DISPOSE OF WASTE
